It is a year of celebration for Off the Ground Theatre, who turn 30 in 2025!
Following the success of The Drunks, Joseph K and Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Off the Ground Theatre return to The Hope Street Theatre with Wild Swimming, a development showcase production, featuring two of their recent youth theatre graduates.
Nell and Oscar meet on a beach in 1595, or is it 1610? Oscar has returned from university and Nell is doing f**k-all, because, well, she can’t. They will meet here again, and again, and again, on this beach, over the next four hundred years. Some things will change, as they do with time. Some things won’t.
Starring Amy Hope-Thompson and Harry Clark, this is an exploration of feminism and cultural progress. It is an interrogation of gender and privilege, and a wilfully ignorant history of English literature, shown through the turbulent relationship between two young people.
Whilst this is Clark’s debut for Off the Ground Theatre, Hope-Thompson has performed with the company previously, as part of the touring productions The Ballads of Billy the Kid and Much Ado About Nothing.
Tickets are on sale now for this edgy, tender show at The Hope Street Theatre in Liverpool. This production will be the latest in a series of shows brought to the theatre, following on from Moth, The Drunks, Joseph K, Accidental Death of an Anarchist & more.
Connor Wray, co-director, said:
‘This is a beautiful play that tells with equal respect and weighting the progress of Nell and Oscar’s relationship, but also the glacially slow progress of feminism in society over the last 400 or so years. It’s amazing to see our young people stepping up to showcase their abilities in the professional arena, something we as a company are always looking to give young artists an opportunity to do.’
Founded in 1995, Off the Ground Theatre have been creating theatre for audiences of the UK and wider Europe for 30 years this year. From Shakespeare to Terry Pratchett, the stories have evolved and been presented in many forms. Based on the Wirral, their tours have included such swashbuckling tales as Sinbad, Around the World in 80 Days, Zorro and The Musketeers, played to audiences across the UK and Ireland.
Off the Ground Theatre champion access to drama and theatre for young people, often promoting from within their own youth theatre set up to their professional company, or seeking local emerging talent from other programmes of excellence, such as Cronton 6th Form College’s Professional Theatre Programme, Young Everyman and Playhouse, LIPA, Liverpool John Moore’s University, The Hammond, Storyhouse Young Company, and many more.
